10-12-02  Celebrity Takedown UPDATE by (bikutoru)

"Gorillaz - Phase One: Celebrity Takedown"

Not content with releasing a string of highly infectious hit singles and multi-platinum worldwide smash album, 2-dimensional pop-punk four-piece Gorillaz are set to produce
the most cutting edge music DVD ever. Titled Gorillaz PHASE ONE: CELEBRITY TAKE DOWN, the two disc set will be released by Virgin on November 19th.

Gorillaz' award-winning design and animation has made international superstars of Murdoc, Noodle, 2D and Russel, and this B-movie style DVD gives unprecedented access to the murky world in which they live. Dropped in the eerily deserted Kong Studios, you can explore, in full 3D, the high-rise building that is their home and the center of their web-world ' all to expose the nasty secrets and constant hazards that are part of the Gorillaz life.

Highlights of the DVD include:

Fully interactive, 3D, 5.1 surround sound experience

Videos for "Tomorrow Comes Today" / "Clint Eastwood" / "19-2000" / "Rock The House" and the unseen, unfinished video for "5/4"

Storyboards and animatic work-in-progress visuals

"Charts of Darkness" ' a behind the scenes documentary.

Five "Gorillaz Bites" (short animation pieces)

Multi-angle Gorillaz "live" performance from the Brit Awards Hidden features

Gallery of band images

On screen animation from the Gorillaz live show to accompany six songs. The five spectacular promo videos will be presented in 5.1 surround sound, with the option to view the original story board designs. The storyboard, with the basic audio track, animatic version with some added effects and the fully cinematic film with 5.1 surround sound and added effects offer a unique insight into how the animation takes shape. Perfect for hardcore fans and soon-to-be converts alike.

The creators of this DVD set out to test the capacities of the format. To make an interactive experience (more in the style of a video game) with a non-linear narrative, multi-award winning designers Zombie Flesh Eaters have brought to life the Gorillaz world by specially generating 3D graphics throughout Kong Studios for the DVD. All previously seen content has been enhanced visually and aurally, with every new element, including transitions and menus created in 3D.

Zombie Flesh Eaters commissioned DGP to produce Gorillaz PHASE ONE: CELEBRITY TAKE DOWN because they have exactly the right combination of skills: creativity, technical experience and the globally renowned Toshiba authoring system ' the hardware used to build titles like The Matrix and Harry Potter! Using materials from a huge range of sources, the project is highly interactive and entertaining, full of consistently breathtaking audio and visuals.

A bonus second disc, an enhanced CD, includes a selection of games, wallpapers, screensavers and articles about the band.

A limited edition of Gorillaz PHASE ONE: CELEBRITY TAKE DOWN will come with a full-color, 48-page illustrated history of the band as well as stickers. Both the limited and standard editions include a map to help navigate the DVD.

This ongoing pop phenomenon continues...

5-31-02 Laika Come Home by FirePissing Bass Goddess

Laika Come Home, an album by musical collaborators Space Monkeyz will be released July 1st by Astralwerks.

Space Monkeyz originally remixed one Gorillaz track, Tomorrow Comes Today, as a b-side for a Gorillaz single. Gorillaz liked it so much that they allowed Space Monkeyz work their unique magic and create this completely reworked dub version the Gorillaz' eponymous album, which came out in March of last year.

Space Monkeyz are D-ZIRE, DUBVERSIVE and GAVVA, who have individually worked with the likes of Linton Kwesi Johnson, George Clinton, Jamiroquai and Horace Andy.

The tracklist is
1. Jungle Fresh (19/2000)
2. Strictly Rubbadub (Slow Country)
3. Banana Baby (Tomorrow Comes Today)
4. Monkey Racket (Man Research)
5. De-Punked (Puck)
6. P45 (5/4)
7. Dub 9 (Starshine)
8. Crooked Dub (Soundcheck)
9. Mutant Genious (New Genuis)
10. Come Again (Re-Hash)
11. A Fistful Of Peanuts (Clint Eastwood)
12. Lil' Dub Chefin' (M1A1)

3-21-02 Gorillaz Go Back To Their Cages by (bikutoru)

Now that their month-long U.S. tour is but a recent memory, animated supergroup Gorillaz are fading into the funny pages for a while, but the individual members will remain active. Vocalist Damon Albarn is releasing an album of West African music and focusing his attention on his longtime outfit Blur, producer Dan the Automator is working on a solo disc as well as producing records by Zack de la Rocha and Peeping Tom, and the remaining Gorillaz will be busying themselves with various other projects.

But that doesn't mean Gorillaz will remain locked up for an extended period of time. In fact, before the end of spring, the band will issue a full dub version of its self-titled platinum debut.

"It's really interesting," Albarn said recently. "Our DJ, whose name is DJ Desire, has been working on it for the last year. He just started off by doing a few mixes and they sounded really good, so now he's done the whole record. He's just taken one aspect of the influence behind the original record and expanded upon it."

"I've just got to finish off the artwork to give it the right sort of vibe, then we can release it," added Jamie Hewlett, who will spend much of his time conjuring story lines and images for the long-ballyhooed Gorillaz feature film, which he hopes will be ready in 2004.

"These things don't just happen overnight," Albarn explained. "They take a long, long time. So really, we're going to go underground for a couple of years. We'll go back to our day jobs and then get back together later."

Albarn said the next Gorillaz studio album will be the soundtrack to the film. And even though the bandmembers could easily release a few songs in the lengthy interim, he has no interest in doing so.

"Gorillaz is not a band, it's an idea," he said. "The idea happened to manifest itself in a band to start out with, but those characters are very much free agents, and so are we. The next stage for us was always to make a feature film about the characters. They might play the film score live, but we're not going to become U2. And when we come back, we want to make the same kind of impact in the movie business as we've done in the music business. After that, who knows? Politics or catering."

While the Gorillaz were wreaking havoc on the music charts last year, Albarn's bandmates in Blur were less than pleased with the monkeys' success. "There was tension until we got back into the studio," Albarn admitted. "But I think the experience has only helped the Blur record, which I'm quite confident will be pretty amazing."

To date, Blur have recorded 15 new tracks and plan to get back together in May for a month to complete their seventh studio album. Albarn said the single is likely to be "Don't Bomb When You Are the Bomb," but he wouldn't discuss the sound or meaning of the track.

"I can't really say anything about it, because if I did, you wouldn't want me back here next time," he quipped.

3-21-02 Letter From Josh by (bikutoru)

Hiya Bikutoru

As far as I know this is not wholly the case. Obviously yes, there is a film on the horizon and another album and lots of stuff that may be coming some time in 2003/2004 - when I do not know. As far as the near future is concerned, Gorillaz have a few things coming up...

Late March (now): Track on Blade 2 Soundtrack w/ Redman "Gorillaz On My Mind"
July-ish: Possible fullscale DVD release w/ videos & "gorilla bites"
Summer: "Dub" reggae-ish version of debut album possibly released.

Also we're working on some cool stuff at the moment like a fan magazine etc - possibly a fan club/website and lots of other stuff for fans, in addition to tons of new content from fans.gorillaz.com and new Gorillaz online games, gorilla bites, and I think the band will start to appear a bit more often on the message board and chat room, but I can't be sure.

Things ARE slowing down a bit for the moment but I guarantee you there will be more stuff out of Gorillaz in the near future.

Hope this helps!

Best
Josh
